On April 12th, 2014, Serve Denton will welcome special guests Dave Dravecky, former Major League Baseball player, and Jimmy Dorrell, Executive Director and President, Co-Founder of Mission Waco/Mission World, at their second-annual Celebration event in Denton, TX. The organization exists to help nonprofits fulfill their mission and advance the common good of Denton County through co-location, collaboration and communication. Serve Denton believes co-location, collaboration, and communication among nonprofits can better meet the needs of our communities in a big way.
Serve Denton is a 501(c)(3), community-based nonprofit that exists to help local nonprofits fulfill their missions, and by providing office space for just $1 rent a year and shared utilities, Serve Denton helps agencies do more with the resources they already have. The event will celebrate Serve Denton’s progress toward co-locating nonprofits to help people in need become truly self-sufficient through many resources under one roof. With more than 30 nonprofit agencies seeking to move in to the first Serve Denton center, this year’s event will highlight the many steps in progress toward making a one-stop-shop a reality in Denton County, especially the move ins of our first two nonprofit tenants, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Rising Star Resource Development Network. Big Brother Big Sisters estimates their move in will save them at least $12,000 a year in overhead expenses, and that’s a number Serve Denton is excited to celebrate.
Dravecky’s story is one of finding hope, courage and perseverance in the midst of dark and overwhelming uncertainty. In 1988, at the top of baseball and his personal life, discovery of cancer and the removal of half of the deltoid muscle in his pitching arm threatened to end his career. Dravecky’s experience can relate to the struggles of many in the Denton community, as do the stories of Dorrell from his years of caring for the poor and mobilizing the middle class.
